Scenario
Helen embarks on a passionate romance with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. Helen’s employer, caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, calls Sam to protect her. He plays Bingo, the owner of the guitar shop where Sam gets his guns.
My Review – Black Doves Streaming on Netflix My Rating
Starring Graham Norton and beyond: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024). 8.5/10 Remember those great British sentimental Christmas movies like Love Actually and Last Christmas, and Black Doves wonderfully incorporates a few of those festive moments into its six dramatic episodes. I say amazing because this British spy thriller has some very violent moments with shootouts, executions and some very dark moments, however these scenes are almost comical or maybe like many others, I have become a little desensitized to violence on TV and in movies.
Reed is a real scene-stealer in Black Doves, as she sells secrets to the highest bidder, regardless of any national loyalties
Black Dove is skillfully directed by Alex Gabassi and Lisa Gunning and written by Joe Barton and stars Ben Whishaw, Keira Knightley and Sarah Lancashire, all in top form playing very dark characters with double lives working together and independently to solve the assassination of a prominent Chinese diplomat. A different role than anything I have seen him play before, Ben Whishaw plays Sam Young, the boyfriend of Helen Webb, played by Keira Nightly. The hitmen work for their ruthless boss Reed, played by Sarah Lancashire, in another wonderful departure from their usual police inspector roles.
Another supporting role I enjoyed was played by Kathryn Hunter as Lenny Lines, another ruthless hired killer
Black Doves moves quickly with a number of interesting characters, including Helen’s husband Wallace, a powerful and ambitious politician who leads his wife’s double life to a dramatic conclusion. As I mentioned, I was surprised by some of the lighter touches of the snow scenes with Christmas carols and the gift-giving around the tree, which I felt added another dimension to what could have been a very dark series. I suspect and hope we’ll see another season of Black Doves, it’s a quality production.
