Later in the film, the photo is shown again and the computer says it’s a 9999% facial match
Kraven’s complex relationship with his ruthless father, Nikolai Kravinoff, leads him on a path of vengeance with brutal consequences, motivating him to become not only the world’s greatest hunter, but also one of the most feared. Aaron Taylor-Johnson takes a trip down memory lane, revisiting some of his most popular action roles on film, ahead of his final portrayal of Marvel’s iconic anti-hero Kraven in Kraven the Hunter. There have been numerous attempts to bring Kraven the Hunter to the big screen, but all ultimately failed. Sam Raimi wanted him to appear in Spider-Man 4 before it was cancelled, and Kraven’s spear appeared in Čudesni Spider-Man 2 (2014) as a teaser for his planned appearance in the also-cancelled Sinister Six film. As for the MCU, Ryan Coogler wanted to include him in Black Panther (2018), drawing inspiration from Christopher Priest’s Black Panther comics, but was unable to secure the rights. Jon Watts wanted Kraven to be the backup villain in Spider-Man: Put Bez Povratka (2021) in case the multiverse story didn’t go as planned. A photo of a man is scanned to see if he’s Kraven and the computer says it’s a 97.3% facial match.
Six stars is probably generous
Sergei Kravinoff: [after his father tries to attack him] You have no right to do this to me anymore. Present in AniMat Casting’s Crazy Cartoon: Caillou’s Revenge (2022). This movie is NOT good. In a lot of ways, this is really bad (see below). But I was still able to enjoy this movie in a fun, silly way. Here are some factors that helped. First off, I’m a huge Spider-Man fan and I remember liking the character Kraven from the 90s animated series.
Okay, now for the bad
I also regularly find entertainment in stupid, lower quality movies. And I’ve enjoyed plenty of other movies from the Sony-Marvel parallel universe. There are some interesting action scenes in there as well. I’m glad they went with an R rating instead of being wimpy (I’m looking at you, Morbius). But by far the best part of this movie is Aaron Taylor-Johnson. His acting talent is on full display and he elevates every scene he’s in. This movie is all over the place, blurry, and pretty stupid.
The computer graphics are bad
There are plenty of moments of unintentional humor, including one of the funniest character reactions I’ve ever seen. The dialogue and line delivery are bad. This is just an overall poorly made movie. But by far the worst part is Ariana DeBose’s performance. I really don’t like being mean, but this is the third time I’ve seen her in a movie (Argylle and I.S.S.), and she does NOT belong there. I couldn’t help but notice how unconvincing she was. The way she delivered the lines made me laugh.
(1 viewing, opening Thursday UltraScreen 12/12/2024)
In the scenes with her and Taylor-Johnson, the contrast in talent couldn’t be starker. Look, you know if this is something you’d like. If this sounds stupid to you, don’t watch it. If you’re not that picky and can still appreciate something with major flaws, you might have a good time.
